Homemade Lotion with Coconut Oil & Lemongrass

Is there any natural ingredient more versatile than coconut oil? From food to beauty to medicine, coconut oil has hundreds of uses!

At Not Your Sugar Mamas, we use it as an ingredient in some of our chocolates and treats. 

Some other out-of-the-box ways to use coconut oil include...

- make-up remover
- cast iron skillet seasoner
- coffee creamer
- substitute for olive oil or vegetable oil in frying pan
- frizzy hair fighter
- body scrub (combine 1 part sea salt, 1 part coconut oil)

This past weekend, we experimented with a super simple 3 step homemade body lotion recipe with a coconut oil base. The results were amazing!

INGREDIENTS

- ½ cup of almond or olive oil (Or experiment! We used avocado oil.)
- ¼ cup of coconut oil
- ¼ cup of beeswax
- 1 teaspoon of vitamin E oil
- 2 tablespoons of shea butter or cocoa butter
- Essential oils (We used 2 teaspoons of lemongrass.)

All ingredients should be available at your local health food store - we got most of ours at Wholefoods!

STEP 1

Prep all ingredients. For best results, chop beeswax into very small pieces or grate with a cheese grater. Our pieces took a long time to melt!

STEP 2

Combine all ingredients in a glass jar with lid. Place jar in hot (just below boiling) water. Agitate jar frequently to combine all ingredients. This process took us about 15 minutes.

STEP 3

Once all ingredients are incorporated, transfer to a clean jar to cool.

Et VOILA! A wonderfully scented all natural lotion! Because all ingredients are shelf-stable and no water is added, this lotion will not spoil - but best if used within six months.
