Tips for savoring the last of summer

We hope you've been thoroughly enjoying your summer. 

How does this happen every year? One day it’s July 4th and the next it’s mid-August. It always blows us away how quickly it all happens. We wanted to touch base before the summer comes to a close to give you some updates and to share some of our tips for enjoying these last few weeks of Summer.

For those of you who aren't on island with us all the time, maybe you've heard by now that we are now serving food at our cafe in Vineyard Haven. That's right, breakfast, lunch, dinner and more! Check out our menu here to see all that we have to offer. If you haven't tried it yet you are SERIOUSLY missing out. We're talking dips, spreads, sandwiches, salads, juices, smoothies, tarts and tons more. If you're here visiting be sure to stop by and see us. 

No matter where you live, be sure to soak up the rest of your summer in whatever small ways you can, September is just around the corner. Here are some of the ways we will be savoring the rest of our summer: 

-Take the scenic route
Do you always drive home from work the same way? Try taking the longer, more scenic route and soak up some beautiful views. 

-Take 10 minutes (or more!) to soak up some Vitamin D
Taking a quick break from your routine to soak up some rays can seriously give you a dose of energy and maybe a much needed mood-boost. 

-Breathe more!
Seriously. When we slow down and sink deeper into the moment by deepening and lengthening each breath, we can slow time down! Although time is still moving at the same pace, when we are more present time won't feel like it's racing by quite as fast. 

-Catch a sunset
Break up your nightly routine by going outside after dinner and watching the sun set. Such a great way to put things in perspective. How lucky are we to be on this globe rotating around the sun? What a trip.

A Recipe for Raw Cacao Bliss // Not Your Sugar Babies Raw Cacao Fudge Balls

It’s time to say sayonara to that pre-packed brownie mix full of chemically produced ingredients and preservatives. BYE GIRL.

These fudgey, chocolatey balls are intensely addictive, insanely easy to make, and super satisfying for sugar-affectionados, minus ANY added sugar! They’re all raw, totally vegan, dairy free, gluten free, with no refined sugars.

We swear these will be your new go-to.  


> 1 cup dates, pits removed
> ½ cup nuts (We used a blend of raw almonds and cashews.)
> 2 tbsp of raw cacao
> ½ tsp of coconut oil
> ½ tsp of vanilla extract
> ⅛ tsp of sea salt
> ¼ c. unsweetened coconut flakes, chopped
> ½ of our Coconut Crunch Chocolate Bar, finely chopped

Yields 10 one inch balls.


Blend all ingredients - except coconut flakes and NYSM chocolate - in food processor (we used a Magic Bullet) until a sticky dough forms. In a bowl, knead coconut flakes and chopped chocolate bar into the mixture. Roll into balls. And presto, finito!

Tip: We like to keep these babies in the freezer. The dates keeps them soft and the coolness makes these treats even more satisfying!

If you try this recipe, feel free to have a little fun and use your creativity! Try oats, sunflower seeds, bits of chopped dried mango or ginger. Take your favorite flavors and run with it. We’d love to hear what worked for you!

A Recipe for Dad // Frozen Mocha-Coco Latte Pop!

This magical frozen treat is the complete opposite of Breakfast in Bed. It's full of the things that make dads into superheros! 

Chocolate! BANG! Espresso! KAPOW! Cashews! BOOM!

Easy to make and free of refined sugar, dairy, and gluten, this treat is sure to get Dad movin' & groovin', zippin' & zoomin' all weekend long! 


> 1.5 cups raw cashews
> 1/4 cup cacao butter (Do not substitute!)
> 4 shots of good espresso (We used Chillmark Coffee Co. Organic Espresso Roast. Alternatively, you could use 1/2 cup of coffee.) 
> 1 tsp fine espresso grind
> 1 tsp vanilla
> 1/2 cup maple syrup
> 1/4 cup olive oil
> 1/2 cup cacao nibs (optional)
> 2 oz raw chocolate (We used  Pure & Simple Chocolate Bar.)


1. Soak the cashews in hot water for 10 minutes.
2. Meanwhile, melt cacao butter on low.
3. Make the 4 shots of espresso.
4. Combine cashews, cacao butter, espresso shots, vanilla, maple syrup, and olive oil in blender. Blend on high speed.
5. Mix in the 1 tsp of espresso grinds. If using cacao nibs mix in as well.
5. Pour into molds and freeze for 4-6 hours.
6. When ready to serve, melt Pure & Simple chocolate on low. Drizzle with spoon over the frozen coffee pops.
7. Enjoy your superhero strength!

Shelf stable treats now available!

We’ve got shelf stable treats for you guys! Pictured here are our seashell chocolates with different types of delicious nuts on the inside, we have “turtles” (a personal favorite) and ginger chia chocolate cups. We have different types of bark and of course our always delicious baked goods. We are very excited to offer you guys shelf stable treats so that you don’t have to worry about them melting on these hot summer days. When you come to our stores you have the option now of getting an assorted box of chocolates, a perfect gift! Come check them out and let us know what you think. Incredible offerings at our retail locations!

Okay so most of you have come to know us from our delicious chocolate bars. But since opening our second retail location this year, we’ve really expanded what we have to offer you all.  Like, really expanded. We recently hired a baker named Julianna and we absolutely love her and all that she has created! She is an incredibly inspired and passionate baker who spent weeks researching delicious new recipes to provide for you all. Everyday we walk in the store she has created not just one but many new wonderful creations! Things like snickerdoodles, banana bread muffins, chocolate coconut scones, coffee cake, strawberry orange bread, chocolate dandy biscotti, chocolate avocado pie and cranberry walnut biscotti…just to name a few.  We are so blessed to have Julianna, Elise, Blair, Evan and Elizabeth all helping us with production this year. Stop by Vineyard Haven to see one of their bright shining faces or stop by our Edgartown store and meet Sarah or Jenny who hold down the fort over there.  We now have extended hours, 7:00am-7pm in Vineyard Haven and 7:30-10pm in Edgartown. Ball crazy

I’ve been posting a lot on facebook lately about our superfood energy balls and people LOVE this product of ours. We get so much positive feedback about these balls it’s amazing. The shelves of Cronig’s are restocked each week with more ballsy bags and each time I walk by our shelf, it looks as if a tornado has come through. They fly off the shelves like crazy! There are so many unique ways to consume raw cacao and we feel really blessed to be able to provide you guys with so many different options. From chocolate bars, to smoothie mixes, to cookies, to energy balls there really is something for everyone. I love reading about new developments in the health and wellness field, I find it very exciting and inspiring to read about how a certain food can truly affect our health for the better. This week I came across an article emphasizing the health benefits of walnuts, and since our balls are made up of mostly walnuts I felt excited to share more about this superfood in case you weren’t already aware of the health properties. There have been numerous studies done showing that people who consumed walnuts moderately significantly lowered their LDL cholesterol (the bad kind) proving that it was a very heart healthy nut. Walnuts contain a variety of nutrients (arginine, polyphenols, omega 3s, gamma tocopherol) which help support the inner arterial lining and guard against abnormal platelet aggregation and heart disease. Change your relationship with dessert

So often people say to me, “Oh my god I love your chocolate, it’s so bad of me! Do you promise that it’s good for me?” This statement evokes all kinds of feelings for me. First, it makes me feel like I’m not doing a good enough job communicating the amazing health benefits that raw chocolate has to offer and second it brings me back to the point of the intention we bring to our eating experiences. When we eat with guilt or shame we are internalizing that emotion and digging it deeper into our cells, creating more problems for ourselves. Imagine if you could eat a meal (or dessert in this case) with NO guilt, fear or shame. What would that feel like? At NYSM we are giving you the permission to do just that. You can revel in the amazing health benefits that raw chocolate has to offer. I wouldn’t tell you to eat desserts all day everyday, I would absolutely tell you to counter your indulgences with lots of GREEN juices or smoothies and plant based meals. But when you are enjoying a NYSM treat, you can feel great about it. Personally, I eat raw chocolate everyday. I throw some raw cacao powder into my green smoothie every morning for the amazing energy and feelings of happiness that it brings me (I’m not just imagining this, cacao actually contains a bliss chemical called anandamide which makes us feel happy). The beauty of our products is that some are designed for your everyday pleasure and some are designed for those days when you really crave something sweet. I’ve been loving the “be local” bar lately, the local honey and mv sea salt is a powerfully delicious combo. I would generally recommend not making a habit out of eating sweeteners everyday, even if they are natural sweeteners but on the days that you do, let yourself fully enjoy the experience and know that with our treats you are doing something really great for your soul and your body. Think about all of the amazing things that your body does for you day in and day out, every second of every day.
